Galatians…

We are saved through Christ alone…

Paul is shocked that people are turning away from the good news so easily. Paul said

“Let God’s curse fall on anyone, including myself, who preaches any other message than the one we told you about.”

We are here to please God not people. Paul received a direct revelation from Jesus Christ himself, no one else taught him. Before becoming a Christian he tried to persecute and kill them. However, God in his kindness chose Paul to be the bearer of good news and revealed himself to him. When the people discovered his amazing conversion they gave God the glory.

Paul emphasizes the importance of Christian leaders being in being united in what they believe. It’s very important to agree upon the fundamentals of our faith. Also to beware of those who try to force their own agendas rather than following Christ Jesus.

It is also very important that we stand up for what we believe in and don’t allow the judgment of others to affect our actions. Paul admonished Peter for not eating with the Gentiles because he was afraid of what the Jewish legalists would say to him. Other Christians followed Peter’s example and also stopped eating with the Gentiles. We need to be very aware that other Christians and non-Christians are always watching our actions. We do not want to lead other weaker Christians astray because we are too afraid of what others think about us. Paul asks Peter why are you trying to make the Gentiles follow the Jewish laws. If the law had been sufficient to save us then Christ would not have had to die on the cross for us.

We received the Holy Spirit after we believed in the good news, we didn’t receive the Holy Spirit by keeping the law, so why you are imposing the law onto yourselves and trying to become perfect by human effort. Christ rescued us we cannot rescue ourselves.

The law was given to the people to show how guilty they were; it was only to last until the coming of Christ as per God’s promise. The only way to receive God’s promise is to believe in Jesus Christ. The Law was our guardian and teacher until Christ came. We are all now united in Christ, there is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male or female. We are all Christians; we are all one in Christ Jesus.

Paul further admonishes the Galatians for reverting back to the law to try to obtain their salvation. We were slaves to the spiritual powers of this world. But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. God sent him to buy freedom for us who were subject to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children. Beware of the false teachers who so anxious to win your favour, they’re not doing it for your good. Abraham had a son born to Haggai, the slave woman, she represents Mount Sinai where people first became enslaved to the law. Sarah’s son Isaac, born of the free woman, represents the heavenly Jerusalem. The son of the slave woman will not share in the inheritance of the son of the free woman. We are children of the free woman, acceptable to God because of our faith.

We have been called to live in freedom, not freedom to live in sin but freedom to serve one another with love. The old sinful nature craves to do evil and if you give into that you produce evil results; sexual immorality, impure thoughts, and eagerness for lustful pleasure the list goes on. Live within the Holy Spirit and you will produce different fruit; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

We need to help and guide other Christians who are stumbling and heading down the wrong path. You are fooling yourself if you think you are too good to help someone in need. You will always reap what you sow, those who lives for themselves in sin will harvest the consequences of decay and death. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everything from the Spirit.

Finally Paul emphasizes that those trying to force the Galatians to be circumcised are doing it only for one reason, which is that they don’t want to be persecuted for teaching that the cross of Christ alone can save. But even those people don’t follow the full extent of the law. It makes no difference whether you have been circumcised or not, what matters is whether your heart has been changed and you have become a new and different person.

Thank you Lord, that are saved through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. I pray that we will not be led astray by false teachings, I pray that we will be example of Christ to our family, friends and enemies. I thank you that did away with the old covenant and that cannot be saved by the law. You took the burden and died in place of us, we simply have to accept it and for this I’m so thankful. In Jesus name, Amen.
