Christ Jesus is my High Priest…

Jesus Christ is God’s son. God promised everything to his Son. God made the universe and everything in it through his Son. Jesus reflects God’s own glory and he sustains the universe through his command. After Christ died and rose again he was seated in the place of honour at the right hand of God.

Jesus is greater the angels, God the Father told Jesus that I have made you my Son and I am your Father. Let all the angels worship Him. God called his angel messengers swift as the wind and servants made of flaming fire, but to his Son he said

“Your throne, O God endures forever and ever.”

God never said to an angel as he did to his son,

“Sit in honour at my right hand until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet.”

Angels are only servants, sent to care for those who will receive salvation.

I cannot drift away from God. If I do then I’m subject to all the punishment liable in violation of the law, due to my disobedience to God. The great salvation does not give us indemnity from the consequences of our sin.

For our sake Jesus became man and was made lower than angels during this short time. Jesus knows the struggles we go through as he went through them himself. Jesus called us his brothers and sisters, he was our perfect leader, and the only one fit to brings us our salvation. Jesus said,

“I will put my trust in him”

when he became human and had to suffer for us. He came to earth to save us, not the angels and because Jesus suffered and went through temptation he is able to help when we are being tempted.

Moses served faithfully and was entrusted with God’s house when he led the Israelites from Egypt. Christ Jesus was faithful to God when came to the earth. Moses helped build God’s house; however Christ is in charge of the whole household of God. We are reminded by the Holy Spirit not to harden our hearts and rebel like the Israelites did in the desert and tested God’s patience. We need to be careful that our hearts are not evil and unbelieving. God created everything and Christ is in charge of the church.

God has promised us a place of rest but only those of us who believe will be able to enter it. However there are people who have heard the good news but they will fail to enter it because they have disobeyed God and hardened their hearts against God. God’s word is sharper than the sharpest knife and exposes the truth, good and bad about us. It exposes us for what we really are. That is why we have Christ Jesus as our high priest and through him we can come boldly to the throne of our gracious God.

A high priest is a man chosen to represent us in our dealings with God. A high priest is human and is subject to the same weaknesses we have which is why he has to offer sacrifices for both their own sins and our sins. Not just any one can become a high priest they must be chosen just like God chose Christ. God told Christ

“You are a priest forever in the line of Melchizedek”

While on earth Christ offered prayers and pleadings with a loud cry and tears, to deliver him out of death. But because of his reverence for God he obeyed and God qualified him to become the source of eternal salvation.

So many of us are still babies in Christ, requiring teaching in the basic things a beginner must learn about the scriptures. As time goes by living on milk is not enough and we must learn more so that we know how to do what is right. We need to stop going over the basics over and over again and instead grow and mature in our understanding. The writer of Hebrews states that it’s impossible for someone who has tasted the goodness of God and turned away to be brought back to God. My personal hope is that such people can be brought back to God. We just need to keep showing Christ’s love through us by caring for others.

God promised to Abraham that he would bless him richly and multiply his descendants; Abraham waited patiently and received what God promised. God’s promises bring us hope as he has bound himself with an oath. God has given us both his promise and oath, these two things are unchangeable because is it impossible for God to lie. We can hold onto his promises with confidence, it is like a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls.

Abraham, tithed to Melchizedek, his name means king of justice and king of peace. Melchizedek was greater than Abraham because he blessed Abraham. Melchizedek is greater than the Jewish priests because we are told that he lives on, Jewish priests die and a successor takes over. Christ is like Melchizedek but Christ is even greater because he is holy and blameless, unstained by sin. Jesus remains a priest for forever; his priesthood will never end. Therefore he is able, once and forever to save everyone who comes to God through him.

Christ is our High Priest, the old covenant had flaws in it and God acknowledged that by promising us a new covenant. In the old covenant the High Priest had to make sacrifices for our sins and their own sins. Christ himself became the sacrifice for our sins he is the eternal High Priest seated in the highest honour beside God. The old covenant is now obsolete.

In the old covenant there were rules and regulations for worship within a man-made tent. Only once a year could a high priest enter into the Most Holy Place, and they could present sacrifices to cover their own sins and those committed in ignorance. Christ has now become the High Priest and he took blood into the Most Holy Place, not the blood of goats and calves. He took his own blood and with it he secured our salvation forever. A will only goes into effect after a person dies, Christ died for us so we could receive our inheritance of eternal salvation that was promised to us. Christ entered into heaven itself to appear before God as our Advocate.

Under the old covenant the priest’s sacrifice didn’t provide perfect cleansing for the people so they had to repeat the sacrifices over and over again. Each time they sacrificed they were reminded of their sins. If they could have provided perfect cleansing the sacrifices would have stopped, for the worshippers would have been purified once for all. Christ came to the earth and he became our perfect sacrifice once and for all. The new covenant was established so that all sin could be forgiven and forgotten, so there would be no further need to offer any more sacrifices.

We now can enter into the presence of God boldly fully trusting him because we have been made clean with Christ’s blood. However, if we keep sinning after knowing the truth there isn’t any other sacrifice to cover these sins. Anyone who disobeyed the law of Moses was put with death without mercy imagine how much more terrible the punishment for those who trample on the blood of Christ as if it were common and unholy. The Lord will judge his own people and it is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God. But we, who do not turn our backs onto God have faith that our salvation is assured.

What is faith? It s the confident assurance that what we hope for is going to happen. It is the evidence of things we cannot yet see. God gave his approval to people in the days old because of their faith. Many examples of faith are given from the Old Testament. Yet the chapter ends with that none of them received all that God had promised. For God has far better things in mind for us that would also benefit them, for they can’t receive the prize at the end of the race until we finish the race.

God disciplines us just like our earthly fathers disciplined us. If God didn’t discipline all his children then we would be illegitimate and not really his children. Take notice of when God disciplines us that we do not ignore him. His discipline is right and good for us because it means we will share in his holiness.

Look out for each other and help each other live a holy and clean life. In the Old Testament they rejected Moses and his message, so God came and spoke to them at the Mountain. God’s voice shook a physical mountain; the people were so terrified they begged him to stop speaking. God’s voice will shake the earth again and only the eternal things will be left. Since we are receiving a Kingdom that cannot be destroyed, let’s be thankful and please God by worshipping him with holy fear and awe.

Continue to love one another with true Christian love. Don’t be greedy for money; God said

“I will never fail you. I will never forsake you”

This is something I can testify to, I may not always have everything that I wanted but I have never been left without what I needed. We have the privilege of being able to continually offer our sacrifices of praise to God through Jesus. Pray for everyone around you, family, friends and your spiritual leaders. Listen to your leaders but do not be swayed by new and strange ideas, remind yourself that Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever, his ways do not change.

Heavenly Father, I thank you so much that you sent Jesus Christ to die on the cross for our sins once and for all, but even more I thank you that Jesus rose again and is seated in heaven at your right hand. I thank you that you look after me and that I don’t lack in any needs, your provision is always more than sufficient. I thank you that you the same yesterday, today and forever and that your promise of eternal life with you will not change. I pray that my many who don’t already know you will come to know you and develop a personal relationship with you. In Jesus name, Amen.
